Lanark Highlands Maple Fall Colour Tour
September and October
Lanark Highlands is located 1 hour south-west of Ottawa and 1 ½ hour north of Kingston.  Its rolling hills and numerous lakes make it a beautiful place to enjoy a drive on country roads where quaint villages and rustic farms abound.  Lanark Highlands turns a vibrant orange and yellow each fall as its many Maple Trees change colour.   Lanark Highlands has a high concentration of Maple Sugar Bushes, taking up most of the North west portion of Lanark County " The Maple Syrup Capital of Ontario".  So where better to view autumn colours?

The Lanark Highlands Colour tour starts in McDonalds Corners, at Wheelers Pancake House and Sugar Camp.  At Wheelers Sugarbush over 730 acres of sugarbush is accessed by various nature trails and board walks that take you easily to the center of the maple stands, as the beauty of nature overcomes the senses.

Tours of the maple production area, playgrounds, and maple displays educate visitors on maple syrup and the sugar bush ecosystem.  Pancake Meals are served in the heritage log pancake house every day from 9 to 5. When you are ready to start your tour head out the lane from the Sugar bush  and turn left onto the Highland Line.  A natural tunnel of maple trees leads you past a heritage stone house on the left side of the road.  Directly after the stone house make a right which takes you down a hill and past some old farms, notice the picturesque patten fences.   At the highway turn left to make your way to Elphin.  Turn right in Elphin and head down to the Mississippi River Valley where the river follows the road all the way to Snow Road (Gas and snacks available).  Head straight through Snow Road notice the wooden silo down the hill on your left before you continue right on Highway 509.

he on Hwy#509 (8.9 KM past the K&P turn) and turn right to Beatty, and take your first left, and then another right to Folger.  Turn left onto the K&P Trail.

The K&P Conservation area covers the old K&P Railway which in its time stretched from Kingston to Pembrooke.  Many hours of hard work went into building this railway through the rugged terrain of Lanark Highlands.  The K&P is affectionately know as the Kick and Push Railway!  Take your time on the Trail, there are many beautiful sections on the trail, be sure to look down as you cross the small bridge.

This tour only covers the part of the K&P, from Folger to Clyde Forks.  8.3 KM past Folger you will turn right off the K&P to Clyde Forks. The old settlements in the area once served as bustling train stations; shipping logs, food, and supplies to and from the Highlands. After leaving Clyde Forks continue on to Joe’s Lake, this beautiful part of the Highlands offers some of the most magnificent views of the Tour. At the Old Blue Store turn left onto the French Line. On the French Line you will carve your way though the maple trees.

Then turn right, onto Lanark Road 511 through Hopetown and over the Clyde River several times (Lanark Highlands face severe flooding this spring as the Clyde and Mississippi Rivers flowed over their banks).  Then you come to the last Village on the Tour.  Lanark is a historic lumber and mill town steeped in history.  You are not far from Balderson Cheese at this point too!
